Peter Hoekstra

Posted on: Tue 22 Jun 2010

A Dutch international capped five times at senior level, Peter Hoekstra, at 6ft 3in, was one of the tallest wingers in League football during the 2000s.

Highly skilful, on his day no defence was safe when he had the ball at his feet. He produced many superb displays and was a huge favourite with the Potters.

One of his best performances in a Stoke City shirt came against Reading in December 2003 when he scored a hat-trick (including a penalty) in a 3-0 home win, and his 20-yard rocket in this same game was voted "Goal of the Season" in 2003/04.

He announced his retirement from the game at the age of 31 having appeared in 250 league games in Dutch and English football, scoring 47 goals.

In 2007, the club held a fans vote to mark 10 years of the Britannia Stadium. Hoekstra was voted as the "Brit-10-Years Player of the Decade" whilst the 3-0 win over Reading was voted as the "Game of the Decade" and the 2004 goal of the season was voted as the "Goal of the Decade".

Appearances for the Potters: 73 + 15 substitute appearance. 12 goals.
