"Mr Dependable" signed for City at the age of 19 after writing to then Manager Frank Taylor to ask for a trial.

His assertiveness obviously paid off as he went on to be a regular full-back or left-back in the first XI for sixteen years, and appear in a record 596 competitive games.

After helping City to win the Second Division Title in 1963 and a League Cup runners'-up medal in 1964, Skeels signed for Port Vale in 1976 and onto Leek Town before retiring from professional football.
