Stoke City 0 Real Madrid 2
Disputed goals from Raul and Roberto Soldado secured Real Madrid a 2-0 win against a brave City side.
The La Liga champions oozed class and proved just too good for the Potters.
The match started and Bernd Schuster's side were first to test the City rearguard, a series of delicate and crisp passes led to midfielder Bueno firing just wide of Steve Simonsen's left hand post.
After just three minutes the Real thought they had taken the lead through Sergio Ramos, however the linesman flagged for offside.
City quickly re-started from the free kick and Ricardo Fuller took off on a mazy run before but drilled his effort just wide.
More exquisite, flowing football from the Spanish side could have resulted in the opening goal of the game.
Bueno combined with Raul, however the shot flew over the bar.
Madrid continued to produce a showcase of football with Ramos launching an inch perfect long ball to Raul, but his attempted chip, dipped just over the crossbar.
The Real Madrid captain eventually gave Bernd Schuster's side the lead, but in controversial style.
Danny Higginbotham looked to have been pushed before Raul side stepped Hill and slotted the ball home at the near post.
Fuller was a constant threat for the Potters, and his powerful run down the right wing almost brought Tony Pulis' side level.
Unfortunately his shot was blocked on the 6-yard box.
With ten minutes of the first half left, City's Jamaican international again went close, but his driving effort evaded everyone in the box.
With the interval just minutes off, Madrid should have made it two, a neat run by Bueno resulted in a driven cross to Guti, but he smashed it wide from just 8-yards.
Seconds later Mamady Sidibe almost grabbed an equaliser, but Dudek watched his shot drift past the right hand post.
To cap off an entertaining last five minutes, Simonsen produced an outstanding save to thwart Granero's close range effort.
The second period began with both sides making changes, however it was City to first try their luck.
Substitute Vincent Pericard neatly turned on the edge of the 18-yard box before firing his shot straight at Madrid keeper Cordina.
275k summer recruit Jon Parkin almost grabbed an exceptional leveller in the 66th minute.
He spotted Cordina off his line and audaciously attempted a 40-yard lob which skimmed the crossbar.
Barely ten minutes later the Spanish side made it two, a disputed penalty was awarded after a challenge in the City 18 yard box.
Soldado stepped up and clinically fired it into the bottom left hand corner to all but seal the win.
Late strikes from Pericard and Andy Wilkinson failed to trouble the Madrid keeper, but Tony Pulis will be delighted by the effort and performance of his troops.
