Tony Pulis has paid tribute to his players after they bounced back from the 4-1 defeat at Newcastle to beat Preston North End.

The City boss revealed he was worried how his players would react to the defeat, as well as all the travelling they have done following the trips to the north east and Ipswich.

Speaking to Stoke City World following the game he said, "To be honest I was worried before the game because of the last week or two.

"But they came through the game and picked up a very important win.

"We have had to do a lot of travelling over Christmas and over the new year period, but we have kept focussed and we are right up there.

"The lads have worked their socks off and they are playing out of their skin at the moment, for them to bounce back from Wednesday tells you everything about them."

Chris Brown's strike in the 67th minute got the Lillywhites back in the game, albeit for four minutes as Leon Cort sealed the win with a powerful header.

And Pulis admitted he was getting nervous after they pegged his side back.

"The goal gives them a lift and you get edgy yourselves because you know one mistake and the game could be in their hands.

"It was lovely to see Leon get the third and take the steam out of Preston.

"I was pleased for him because he's a great lad and one of those I think will get better with us.

"He is still a little bit quiet on the pitch though, but i'm sure that will get better as he and Ryan grow together at the back."
