City striker Adam Rooney has hailed last night's Under 21 friendly a success despite his Irish side going down 3-0 to their English counterparts.

The 19 year old was brought off the bench to play the final 25 minutes of the game at Southampton's St Mary's Stadium.

A lively cameo saw him in the thick of the action, hitting the back of the net for Ireland only for the linesman to flag for offside.

"It was a great experience for me," Adam told Stoke City World.

"There were 32,000 people there and that's the biggest crowd I've ever played in front of.

"Obviously I'm disappointed with the result, because when it was 0-0 at half-time we should have really been ahead.

"In the second half England showed what a good team they are, but even then we had some great chances.

"I scored a goal which the linesman gives offside for and everyone in the dressing room was saying it was onside.

"That was a decisive factor because it would have made it 2-1 in a spell when where we we're on top."

Rooney wasn't the only Stoke youngster called up to honour their country for the game, as Ryan Shawcross was also named in Stuart Pearce's England Under 21 squad for the fixture.

Rooney was hoping to go toe-to-toe against Shawcross, but believes he should be pleased with the call up despite not being named amongst the matchday squad.

"It would have been great to have played against Ryan so I could have shown him up," smiled Rooney.

"Obviously it's disappointing for him not to play tonight but it is a massive achievement for him just to be called up into the squad.

"He's shown how good he is at Stoke and I'm sure it won't be long before he gets his first cap."

Meanwhile, the Republic of Ireland's senior squad face Brazil in Dublin tonight with City midfielder Glenn Whelan in the squad for the game.

Coverage of the match begins at 7.30pm on Sky Sports 1 with kick off at 7.45pm.
