City midfielder Glenn Whelan gained his first senior cap for the Republic of Ireland yesterday in their 1-1 draw with Serbia.

The 24-year-old played the full ninety minutes in what was Giovanni Trappatoni's first game in charge.

Substitute Marko Pantelic had opened the scoring for the visitors with only fifteen minutes of the game remaining, but an injury-time equaliser from Wolves striker Andy Keogh rescued a draw.

Whelan and his Irish team-mates now travel to London to face Colombia at Fulham's Craven Cottage on Thursday night.

Their first clash, a friendly against Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, takes place a week on Tuesday.
