Glenn's Glory

Posted on: Sat 06 Sep 2008

City midfielder Glenn Whelan scored his first international goal this afternoon as the Republic of Ireland recorded a 2-1 win over Georgia in Germany.

Whelan's long range strike proved too difficult to handle for Georgia's goalkeeper Giorgi Loria who fumbled the effort into the back of the net.

The Irish had taken the lead in the game after 13 minutes through Reading striker Kevin Doyle before Whelan's goal doubled their advantage on 70 minutes.

Schalke's Levan Kenia grabbed a late injury time goal for Georgia but it would be Giovanni Trapattoni's side that would pick up all three points in the Italian's first competitive game in charge.

The Republic now head to Montenegro for their second World Cup qualifier on Wednesday.

Elsewhere, Seyi Olofinjana played the full ninety minutes in Nigeria's 1-0 victory in South Africa.

Getafe's Ikechukwu Uche grabbed the only goal of the game in the 70th minute with the win putting Olofinjana's team eight points clear at the top of their group after winning all four of their World Cup qualifiers to date.

Meanwhile, Abdoulaye Faye completed Senegal's 3-2 defeat in Algeria yesterday.

Recent capture Ibrahima Sonko was an unnamed substitute for the game while Amdy Faye and Salif Diao missed out on the action having also been called up into the squad.

A back injury picked up in training last week meant Thomas Sorensen missed Denmark's 0-0 draw in Hungary earlier today while three more Potters are still set for action this weekend.

Ricardo Fuller and Demar Phillips are in the Jamaican team for tonight's World Cup qualifier against Sven Goran Eriksson's Mexico while Mamady Sidibe and Mali play Congo away tomorrow afternoon.

Further updates on these games will be found here on stokecityfc.com in due course.
