Stoke City Football Club are urging their male fans not to score an own goal over their health this evening.

As part of Men's Health Week, which kicked off on Monday running through until tomorrow, the Club have teamed up with NHS Stoke-on-Trent to encourage men to take action over their own health.

A men's health fair is being held at the Britannia Stadium between 5.00pm and 9.00pm tonight so why not pop along.

All male fans are being offered a free health check at the event which will include looking at a man's height and weight, body mass index, drinking habits and smoking status.

Every man who has a health check, visits the different health information stands and takes part in the football activities and competitions will be given a free bag of sports related goodies.

At the event there will also be:

- A keepy up competition
- A speed check to see how hard you can strike the ball
- A competition to guess how many steps it takes to go on the stadium tour
- Prizes up for grabs include: signed posters, signed pictures, a signed football and a VIP day out at Stoke City

During the fair there will also be free samples of fresh fruit and vegetable snacks as well as local health information.

There will also be the chance to find out more about quitting smoking as well as being able to have a confidential chat about sexually transmitted diseases.

Director of Public Health, Dr Giri Rajaratnam, said, "Too many men in Stoke-on-Trent take too many risks with their health for example by drinking and smoking too much or being overweight.

"One of the biggest risks here is men's reluctance to seek help from services or to take part in health improvement programmes.

"We need to do all we can to get men accessing services locally and to do this we need to promote what's out there to improve their health and wellbeing.

"At both events there is a real opportunity for men to find out more about their own health by getting their blood pressure checked and their risk of getting diabetes assessed, to help head off any potential long-term problems."

Stoke City Manager Tony Pulis added, "We as a Football Club are delighted to be working alongside the Stoke-On-Trent NHS to promote 'Men's Health Week.'

"You only have to look at the impact of Stoke City being in the Premier League to realise how important football is to people in this area.

"It is a powerful engagement tool that can have a huge impact on people's lives.

"This event is a clear demonstration of the Club's commitment to being a true community partner."
