Festive Football
Stoke City have played 28 Football League games on Christmas Day morning from 1891 to 1954.
The Potters first ever game on the 25th December 1891 resulted in a 3-2 defeat in Lancashire against Preston North End. Edward Evans and Joseph Schofield got the goals for a City side playing that year in black and amber stripes.
Preston are also the team Stoke have played the most on Christmas Day. Between 1891 and 1900, there were five First Division encounters and Stoke won just one, 1-0 at home in 1895.
The club's best victory on Christmas Day was a 5-1 triumph at Grimsby Town in 1937, while their heaviest defeat came at Sheffield Wednesday in 1897 (lost 4-0).
The last game City played on December 25th was in 1954 where a John King hat-trick saw the Potters overcome Bury 3-2.
It was a season where the Potters would face Bury seven times, including the return match in the league on December 27th (drew 1-1) and five times in the cup where additional replays were played instead of extra-time.
