Fuller Backs Barclays Pledge

Posted on: Sat 20 Mar 2010

RICARDO FULLER has given his backing to the pledge from Barclays to donate £1,000 to Sport Relief for every goal scored as well as £500 for every effort that hits the target in the Premier League this weekend.

The added incentive from the Premier League's main sponsors has been met by approval from City's top goalscorer, who says he will be desperate to play a part in raising what could amount to a staggering £100,000.

"It's a great incentive for every single player this weekend to go out there and score a goal," the Jamaican international told stokecityfc.com. "For me as a striker, I'm always looking to score anyway, but with Barclays offering to pay up I will be trying even harder on Saturday, and I'm sure the other lads will be too.

"Sport Relief is a great charity and all of the lads try to raise money for them anyway, but this is a different way of doing it and I'm sure there will be a lot of goals going in all over the country as everyone tries to raise a significant amount of money."

Kevin Wall, Managing Director of Barclays added: "It's fantastic that we are able to harness the excitement of the Barclays Premier League to raise money for Sport Relief. We know that top flight English football is all about attacking play, competitiveness and goal scoring and we hope that the Sport Relief Weekend, proves to be a record breaker for goals and fundraising."

This campaign has already been a record-breaker for goal scoring. The 500-goal landmark for the season was reached quicker than in any other season in mid-December 2009.

Since then a further 255 goals have been scored bringing the average to 2.77 per game this season, putting it almost neck and neck with the record breaking 1999-2000 season which averaged 2.78 goals per game at the same stage of the season.

With the number of players having scored more than ten already in double figures, and Wayne Rooney currently leading the Barclays Race for the Golden Boot with 23 strikes, it is hoped that this season could go on to beat the record for a 38 game season, the 1060 scored in 1999/2000.
