STOKE CITY midfielders Glenn Whelan and Liam Lawrence have both been named in Giovanni Trapattoni's latest Republic of Ireland squad.

The pair are in the Italian's party of 28 to feature against Argentina at the opening of the new Aviva Stadium on Wednesday 11th August, just three days before City kick off their Barclays Premier League campaign against Wolverhampton Wanderers.

Both will be looking to impress as they strive to cement their places in Trapattoni's starting eleven for the forthcoming European 2012 Qualifying campaign which gets underway against Armenia in September.

The former Real Madrid boss told FAI.com: "It will be a special occasion for everyone to be involved in the first-ever game in Aviva stadium and Argentina will be a test for our players.

"The game comes at a crucial time in our preparation for the European Championship qualifying campaign and we must use it to strengthen our squad for the opening qualifiers against Armenia and Andorra."

The match will be screened live on Sky Sports 2, with kick off at 7:45pm.
