Sorensen's Euro Hopes In The Balance

Posted on: Tue 31 Aug 2010

THOMAS SORENSEN left Stamford Bridge at the weekend with an elbow injury placing a question mark over his international prospects for the second time in four months.

The Danish international goalkeeper will undergo further treatment on the problems before deciding if he is fit for his country's Euro 2012 qualifiers against Iceland next week.

The injury isn't anywhere near as serious as the dislocated elbow which he suffered in the defeat at Stamford Bridge in April, but it is nevertheless a concern to him.

"It's the other elbow this time and it's quite sore," he revealed. "I damaged it at Wolves on the opening day of the season and it's been niggling me ever since.

"I've been having ice treatment and I hope it will clear up in time. I want to play for Denmark if I can because it is a qualifier, but my priority is to stay fit for the club."

He added: "The encouraging thing is that Denmark don't play until next Tuesday, so I have can give it a good chance to get it right before I decide whether to go."

Sorensen saved one penalty at Stamford Bridge to deny England midfielder Frank Lampard but was beaten by a second one from Didier Drogba in the closing stages.

While he was pleased to deny Lampard, he was disappointed to have given away the spot kick by bringing down Nicolas Anelka which allowed Drogba to score and settle a game in which City had their moments, particularly in the second half.

"At 1-0, there was always a chance we could snatch a point and we were having a good spell," he added. "It was disappointing to give the penalty away because Anelka wasn't really going anywhere and that goal obviously killed us off at that stage."
