Gudjohnsen's Permanent Move

Posted on: Thu 02 Sep 2010

STOKE CITY have confirmed that Icelandic international Eidur Gudjohnsen has completed a permanent move to the Britannia Stadium.

City had initially lined up the 31-year-old former Chelsea and Barcelona star on a season-long loan agreement, but that proposed temporary transfer effectively took him to the end of his two-year contract with the French club Monaco.

Therefore, on a busy transfer deadline day at the Britannia Stadium, Gudjohnsen signed a permanent one-year contract after the Potters agreed personal terms with the player and an undisclosed fee with his former club.

"The fact that Eidur is now our player makes this an even better piece of transfer business for this Football Club," said manager Tony Pulis.

"The lad desperately wanted to come back and play in the Premier League and he is eager to make his mark at this level again, so he now has an excellent opportunity to achieve that ambition here and help the Club move forward."

Gudjohnsen's arrival was one of three incoming transfers that City sealed in a hectic countdown to the transfer deadline on Tuesday evening.

While Marc Wilson completed his move from Championship club Portsmouth in a player-plus-cash exchange deal that took Liam Lawrence and David Kitson in the opposite direction, Jermaine Pennant agreed to a loan move from Real Zaragoza.

Pennant arrived at City's Clayton Wood Training Ground at lunchtime today and immediately began preparing for his return to English football.

Pulis revealed that Gudjohnsen and Salif Diao, who returned to the Club yesterday by signing a two-year deal, will be put through a "mini pre-season" over the next twelve days, while he will also assess Pennant's fitness level.

"We're looking for Eidur and Jermaine to come in and make an impact, so at least we have these next 12 days to get them ready," he added.

"What part they have to play in the Aston Villa match will be determined by how much work we can do with them between now and then."
