Winning Start For International Pair

Posted on: Mon 06 Sep 2010

STOKE CITY pair Glenn Whelan and Tuncay made winning starts to the Euro 2012 campaign with their respective countries on Friday evening.

Whelan was in the Republic of Ireland side that claimed a 1-0 victory over Armenia in Group B, while Tuncay played for 80 minutes of Turkey's 3-0 victory over Kazakhstan as they also got off to an impressive start in Group A of the competition.

The Republic of Ireland triumph was notable for the fact that Whelan's former City team-mate set up the 76th minute winner for Keith Fahey.

And Tuncay featured prominently in Turkey's comfortable win over Kazakhstan thanks to goals from Arda Turan, Hamit Altintop and Hihat Kahveci.

Asmir Begovic was also involved in Bosnia and Herzegovina's opening success, a 3-0 win over Luxemburg in Group D, but he was on the bench for that game.

Whelan and his Ireland team-mates will now be looking to build on their successful start when they face Andorra on Tuesday evening while Tuncay, Begovic and Thomas Sorensen also have Euro 2012 qualifiers.

Turkey are at home to Belgium, Bosnia entertain France and Sorensen's Denmark side face Iceland, a game that will no doubt be of interest to Eidur Gudjohnsen.
