Michael is now in his second season at the Britannia Stadium after joining City in the summer of 2008 from Sheffield United, where he had spent his entire career.
The 26-year-old was at Manchester United as a youngster but he was released at 16 and got his breakthrough at Bramall Lane, where former Red Devils star Steve Bruce was in charge at the time.
The highly-rated midfielder made over 250 appearances for the Blades and was once courted by Liverpool after an impressive Premier League season.
He returned to the top flight with City last summer but made just one league appearance all season, with a further nine outings from the bench.
