Stoke City 2 Burnley 0
Posted on: Wed 17 Nov 2004
A youthful City reserve side cruised to a 2-0 win over Burnley at the Lyme Valley Stadium.
Goals from Laurence Hall and Marc Goodfellow either side of half-time meant a third successive league victory.
Goodfellow almost opened the scoring in the 12th minute when he raced clear of the Burnley defence, but 'keeper Michael Hale blocked his effort.
The visitors went close through Matthew O'Neill, Rhys Carpenter and Tom Ince while Hale tipped over Richard Keogh's header.
Lewis Neal shot into the side netting on 36 minutes, but five minutes later Hall broke the deadlock when he headed home Neal's cross via the inside of the post.
Just after the break Goodfellow pounced on a poor backpass but, after rounding the 'keeper, shot into the side-netting.
But he wasn't to be denied ten minutes later when he raced clear to slot the ball under Hale.
David May's header from Marc Pugh's corner on the hour was headed off the line by Neal.
Goodfellow almost added a third but his shot rebounded off the angle of post and crossbar, and Hale tipped Jay Denny's follow-up shot over.
Hale produced a great save from Brian Wilson's free-kick and although Richard Keogh steered the rebound home, his effort was ruled out for offside.
City: Cutler, Wilson, Dickinson, Keogh, Owen, Henry, Hutchinson, Denny, L. Hall, Neal, Goodfellow (Palmer, 87). Subs (not used): Sanna, Cartwright, Bapist, Teague.
