Barnsley 3 Stoke City 0

Posted on: Wed 16 Nov 2005

Ed De Goey limped off at half-time with an injury. Empics

City's progress in the Pontins Holiday League suffered a heavy setback as Barnsley ran out comfortable victors at Oakwell.

Despite fielding a strong eleven, the Potters second string never looked likely to take anything from the game and the Tykes were well worth the win.

Two strikes within three first-half minutes effectively ended the contest as former Manchester United youngster Daniel Nardiello raced clear of the City back-line to finish coolly past Ed De Goey and Nicky Wroe beat the Dutch stopper with an audacious effort from close-range.

City were offering little in attack and home 'keeper Scott Flinders was rarely tested as the Yorskshire outfit put the Potters' challenge to bed five minutes after the break.

Thomas Harban's teasing corner was met by a towering from defender Robbie Williams to leave substitute 'keeper Rob Duggan with no chance.

Duggan, who had replaced the injured De Goey at the interval was intent on halting Barnsley's efforts to forge an even greater advantage and made a string of fine saves, the best a flying parry to thwart Nardiello's exquisite chip.

Icelandic International striker Hannes Sigurdsson had City's best effort to salvage some pride two minutes from the end, but his powerful header from a Peter Sweeney corner flew wide of the target to complete a miserable afternoon for the Potters.
