Gary Checks In

John Coates, Gary Rowett, Tony Scholes

STOKE CITY are delighted to confirm the appointment of Gary Rowett as the Club’s new manager.

The 44-year-old has signed a three-year contract after the Potters agreed a compensation package with Derby County.

Peter and John Coates said: “We are delighted to be able to move so quickly to secure Gary’s services and we are now looking forward to working with him towards our objective of returning to the Premier League as soon as possible.”

Rowett launched his managerial career with Burton Albion, guiding them to a fourth place finish in League Two in his first season in charge. He took them to sixth the following season before joining Championship side Birmingham in October 2014.

They were 21st in the table when he arrived and went on to finish 10th but in December 2016 he was removed from his role at St Andrews following a change in ownership, despite the fact the side were seventh in the table at the time.

He was appointed manager of Derby in March of last year and in his first full season – the 2017/18 campaign – they finished sixth, losing to Fulham in the Play-Off semi-finals.

As a player, Rowett made more than 400 league and cup appearances for Cambridge, Everton, Blackpool (on loan), Derby, Birmingham, Leicester, Charlton and Burton.
