Hughes Suffers Shawcross Blow

Ryan Shawcross

RYAN SHAWCROSS will miss tomorrow evening’s encounter with Manchester United after suffering a back injury in training.

The City skipper would have been a key part of Mark Hughes’ plans for the live-televised encounter, but will now have to make do without the influential defender.

Whilst Hughes was quick to play down the severity of the injury, he did confirm that it is serious enough to write him out of his plans for the fixture with the league leaders

“The one big injury we have unfortunately is Ryan Shawcross, who will certainly miss the game at the weekend,” he told the media on Friday morning.

“He has a small issue with his back, it isn’t related to the one before, but it is a ligament issue and he is a bit stiff."

“We aren’t quite sure how long he is going to be out of action for, but we hope that it settles down quickly.”

Shawcross’ absence could pave the way for Kevin Wimmer to make his Stoke City debut after he completed an £18M switch from Tottenham Hotspur prior to the closure of the transfer window.

“Kevin is only 24, and we feel that he has a lot of development to come, which was part of the attraction to him,” he added.

“He understands that he needs to play, these are key years for him, and he wanted the opportunity to play more regularly, which he is hopeful will happen here.

“He has tremendous ability, a great range of passing and is a big strong guy. He adds to the quality we have at the back.”
