Lambert Reflects On 'Outstanding Victory'

Paul Lambert

PAUL LAMBERT lavished praise upon his players after they ensured him of a perfect start to his rein in charge of the Club.

The Scotsman masterminded the Potters first Premier League victory of the year and only a third clean sheet of the season against Huddersfield Town on Saturday.

Goals from Welsh international Joe Allen and Senegalese front-man Mame Diouf elevated City out of the bottom three, at Southampton’s expense, and Lambert was in buoyant mood following the encounter.

Speaking to the media he said: “I thought we were absolutely outstanding, right from the off!

“The tempo of the performance and the support from the stands was absolutely incredible, and as I said before we need the players and supporters to bounce off each other, and they did that today."

“The general energy of the team was top drawer, and the two goals we scored were absolutely brilliant too - we never looked in danger of conceding which was another real positive.

“If we had won, 2-1 or 3-1 of course I would still be standing here delighted, but the back four deserved that clean sheet today and it just helped cap off an outstanding day for us.”

Lambert admits that he almost forgot just home demanding the rigours of Premier League management can be, saying he will be celebrating his maiden victory as boss with some much needed rest and recuperation.

“What will I do tonight, I will just go home, rest and have a good sleep - I think I need it after that,” he laughed.

“I forgot what it is actually like out there, it is hard work and you kick and head every ball with the guys, so it is tiring, but the adrenaline just gets you through it."

“That’s just how I am and how I operate, it’s been a few years since I was in charge in the Premier League, but we have another 14 to go this season, so I need to go and get some rest.”
