Loan signing to be assessed after Southampton game...
GARY ROWETT says Cuco Martina could be involved against Wigan on Wednesday, but first will be assessed after tonight’s U23 fixture against Southampton.
The Curaçao international joined the Potters on a season-long loan deal from Everton last week, but after a lack of training sessions he was not risked for Saturday’s trip to Preston.
The 28-year-old was happy to make his debut at Deepdale, but Rowett insists Martina will benefit from a few training sessions and tonight’s Premier League 2 match action against the Saints at Clayton Wood before making his Potters bow.
“He was up for playing on Saturday but he hadn’t had any game time apart from 15 minutes in pre-season so he was just a bit behind so we didn’t want to through Cuco in without any training or match exposure,” Rowett explained.
“He’s going to play for a period tonight for the under-23s against Southampton and we’ll assess it, but we won’t play him for too long so we don’t rule him out for Wednesday.
“He’ll still be an option for us, but the most important thing is for anyone that’s selected is fit enough to have an impact on the game at that time.”
The City boss added: “He likes to defend and he’s happy to be in one on one situations defensively, he reads the game quite well, he offers versatility, pace power across the back line which is what we’re looking for.”
