Shaqiri Calls For Passion

Xherdan Shaqiri

XHERDAN SHAQIRI says it’s important Stoke City show pride and passion when they take on Newcastle United on New Year’s Day.

The Potters will kick-off the new calendar year at the bet365 Stadium tomorrow aiming to record back-to-back home league wins for the first time since March.

Shaqiri was one of several key players rested in City’s heavy defeat at Chelsea 24 hours ago and is likely to return to the starting line-up against the Magpies.

The Swiss international knows the pressure is on to gain maximum points from Monday’s encounter and is eager to repay supporters for their backing over the festive period.

“It’s our job to give everything in this game and every game to win for the fans and the Club, that’s the most important thing we have to do,” he told Premier League Productions.

“We have to give everything on the pitch and play our best for the shirt on our backs, if we do that then our fortune will come.

“It’s essential that we fight for everything for our supporters because they deserve this; they follow us at every single game, they are very loud and we want to pay that back with good performances and points."

“We play for the people and this time of year is very special for them, it’s a period I’ve got used too with the extra games, but I’ve enjoyed it because I love playing football.

“This is a busy and expensive time of the year for everybody, so we need to repay that support by getting a win against Newcastle and picking up more points in the second half of the season.”

Tickets for the New Year’s Day home game against Newcastle United are available – visit the bet365 Stadium Ticket Office, scfcdirect.com/events or call on (01782) 367599.
