Shaqiri Eyes Repeat Success

Xherdan Shaqiri

XHERDAN SHAQIRI hopes any repeat of his goalscoring form against Newcastle United helps the Potters pick up all three points at the bet365 Stadium on New Year’s Day.

The Swiss international has experienced contrasting emotions following his two previous consecutive strikes against the Magpies in the Premier League.

His first effort secured a late 1-0 victory over the North East side in 2016, while his second goal earlier this season proved to be nothing but a consolation as City fell to a 2-1 loss.

Speaking to Premier League Productions ahead of the encounter in North Staffordshire tomorrow afternoon, Shaqiri said he is eager to make it three in three against Rafa Benitez’s side and claim a much-needed win.

“It was a beautiful goal earlier this season but we lost in the end which was disappointing for everyone,” the 26-year-old expressed.

“I hope that this time I score and we win - that is my wish for the game on Monday.

“I try to do my best in every game, both for myself and my team mates to help in every situation, with or without the ball.

“Whether it be a pass, assist or a goal, I try in every game and the Newcastle United match will be exactly the same.”

The Magpies head to the bet365 Stadium on Monday on a run of just one win from their previous 12 fixtures following their goalless draw with Brighton & Hove Albion yesterday at St. James’ Park.

That sequence of results has left Rafa Benitez’s side one place and one point below the Potters in the table, but despite this, Shaqiri is aware the Magpies possess a solid squad who could make life difficult for City.

“I think Newcastle have a good team with some good players,” Shaqiri added. “They also have in Rafa Benitez a good coach who knows how to play and has a lot of experience.

“They will come here to try and win because they too are in a dangerous area in the table where anything in possible.

“I know it is going to be a tough game but we have the quality in our squad to go out and win it.”
