Defender delighted following City switch...

TOMMY SMITH says he couldn’t have cherry picked a better club to join in the Championship after signing for Stoke City earlier today.

The defender put pen-to-paper on an initial three-year contract after the Potters agreed an undisclosed fee with Huddersfield Town for his services.

The 27-year-old arrives having played over 200 games for the Terriers, a club he helped guide to promotion to the Premier League and enjoy two seasons in the top-flight.

Following seven years in West Yorkshire however, Smith felt the time was right for a fresh challenge and says he is excited to be joining what he considers a massive club in the second tier.

“I’m really excited to be here,” the right back told stokecityfc.com. “When the opportunity came up to join a club like Stoke City it was one I was never going to turn down.

“I’ve heard a lot of good things about the Club from players past and present so when the opportunity arose and I really thought about the Club and where they wanted to go it was a no brainer for me.

“It was difficult to leave Huddersfield Town, I won’t lie about that, I spent a large part of my career there and had some amazing times, but ultimately I was ready for a new challenge and if there’s one club in the Championship you could hand pick to embrace a new challenge then it would be Stoke City.

“The Club has fantastic facilities, a fantastic setup, a great heritage and is a club which is destined to be in the Premier League. It’s a Premier League club in all-but name and I’m delighted to be part of it moving forward.

“I just can’t wait to get going now.”
