STOKE CITY U23 - 1 (Devlin, 90)

READING U23 - 4 (Novakovich 29, 40) Barrett (59, 81)

STOKE CITY's U23s were knocked out of the Premier League Cup in their final group stage fixture as they were defeated 4-1 by Reading at Clayton Wood on Thursday afternoon.

A victory would have ensured Glyn Hodges' side progressed to the knockout stages, but braces from Andrija Novakovich and Josh Barrett meant the table toppers were the victorious.

Substitute Jack Devlin scored late on for the Potters but it was too late to salvage anything out of the game.

It took 15 minutes for the first real effort on goal and it came when Julien Ngoy found space on the edge of the box, but his effort was too close to Driscoll.

The visitors took the lead on the half hour mark as Novakovich was played into a one-on-one position and he slipped the ball calmly past Isted to put Reading in front.

Novakovich got his and Reading's second five minutes before the break as he turned past a helpless Harry Souttar and poked the ball past Isted.

HALF TIME: STOKE CITY 0-2 READING

On the hour mark it was three, as Josh Barrett found too much space on the edge of the box to get his shot away which beat Isted and went into the top right-hand corner.

Half-time substitute Tom Edwards made a positive impact for the Potters, putting several good crosses in from the left, with the best reaching Ngoy 12 yards out who could only fire over.

It was four on the 77th minute and Barrett got his second of the game after shrugging off a challenge in the area and converting past Isted.

Stoke did get one back in the final seconds of the game as a misplaced pass allowed Dan Jarvis in on goal and he squared to substitute Jack Devlin who tapped home.

The young Potters are next in action on Tuesday as they travel to the London Stadium to face West Ham United (7pm).
