Striker nets second half treble as U18s claim Saints victory...
STOKE CITY’S U18s staged a superb second half comeback to record a 3-2 victory over Southampton in the Premier League Cup on Saturday.
Having fallen 2-0 behind in the first half, Richard Walker’s Potters outfit stormed back in the second 45 thanks to a hat-trick from forward Ethon Varian.
The Irish striker netted his first on the hour mark when a clearance was reworked into the box and he latched onto a knockdown for a simple finish from close range.
The 17-year-old once again demonstrated his predatory instincts inside the box 15 minutes later when a Potters corner caused mayhem in the Saints box and Varian poked home from close range.
With the Potters in the ascendancy, they completed a remarkable turnaround late in the game when they caught their hosts on the break, with Varian netting his third off the afternoon when finishing off a swift move inside the box.
Having lost their opening group game against Liverpool, the Potters will need to win their final encounter at home to Reading in December and hope that results go their way if they are to progress to the knockout stages.
