Whelan Departs For Villa

Glenn Whelan

GLENN WHELAN has ended his long-standing association with Stoke City by completing a permanent switch to Aston Villa, the Potters can confirm.

The 33-year-old Republic of Ireland midfielder has brought the curtain down on his nine-year career at the bet365 Stadium by signing a two-year contract with the Championship club after Villa agreed to pay an initial £1.25million, which could rise to £2million, for his services.

Whelan made more than 330 appearances for City after joining the Club from Sheffield Wednesday for £500,000 in January 2008.

Within months of arriving at the Club he had helped the Potters clinch promotion to the Premier League and was a mainstay in the side that became firmly established in the top-flight.

Whelan has been a model of consistency throughout his time in North Staffordshire and few players can have provided such excellent value for money.

The Club would like to place on record its sincere thanks to Glenn for his undoubted contribution and wish him all the best for the future.
